New to yoga and nervous about taking your first class? Trying something new can be a little intimidating, so just know, you aren’t the first to feel this way. Here are some tips to help you feel a more comfortable and confident on the big day!

What you should wear to yoga can vary depending on gender, personal preference, and what kind of class you’re taking. Try to stick to workout gear that fits snuggly to the body (yoga pants, spandex, board shorts, athletic shorts, tank tops instead of t-shirts). This way, when you are transitioning through the postures, you aren’t being distracted by loose clothing hanging in your face or taking on an uncomfortable shape of their own. If the class you’re attending is Bikram yoga or a Hot Yoga style, opt for yoga pants with lighter fabric or shorts.

Yoga is generally done barefoot. So, you should be aware of proper shoe etiquette.  If you are unclear on what to do with your shoes, look to see what everyone else is doing or ask someone at the studio’s front desk.

Most studios will have mats available to use or rent if you don’t own one already, some other essentials you may want to have on hand, or buy there, are a basic gym towel and a bottle of water.

If the whole idea of yoga is just too intimidating, opt for our Intro To Yoga option in the Personal Fitness tab of our site. It’s a 10-week private yoga membership that includes a private yoga class at a location of your choice (home, beachfront) each week focusing on the basics of yoga. After 10 weeks, you have the option to continue your private yoga membership with our Warrior 1 or Warrior 2 class options. If you are new to yoga or have only been a few times, this is a great way to establish a fundamental practice. You will learn the skills needed to maintain a safe and injury free practice for life.
